Description
HAYMA KHARIJIYA
The region of Hayma Kharijiya is home to the coffee growing village of Wadi Nasim. Coffee has been grown for generation in this small, hilltop village, for as long as 400 years according to some narrations.
Located on the west side of Sana’a City, Hayma Kharijiya is a popular region for growing coffee, with some 1,000 families growing it – mostly at an altitude of 1700-2100. Known for its mild weather and fresh air, as well as the chain of mountains known as the Navy Blue Mountains (due to the colour). The air is so clear that you can stand anywhere on the mountain and see all the regions: Bani Matar to the east, Al-Hayma Al Dakhiliyah to the north, Manakhah to the west, and Dhamar to the south.
THE GOVERNORATE OF SANA’A
The Sana’a governorate has the biggest share of specialty coffee production, in both quality and quantity in Yemen – you will see its name on many premium coffees stemming from Yemen. The main coffee growing areas are Hayma Dakhiliya, Hayma Kharijiya, Bani Matar, Bani Ismail, and Haraaz. Altitude, soil fertility, microclimate and rainfall are all contributing factors behind some of the finest coffee in the world.
Sana’a is also home to Yemen’s capital city, which has one of the longest continuous coffee cultures in the world. Much of the coffee consumed there is prepared using the traditional Ibrik method, brewing coffee in a copper or silver pot over hot charcoals.
