Description

Nyeri Hill farm is situated about 2 km NorthWest of Nyeri town along the Nyeri-Ihururu road. The farm lies in Nyeri District approximately 300 Km North of the capital Nairobi. It lies at an altitude of 1800 metres above sea level at the lowest point with the highest point at 2200 metres above sea level. Nyeri hill farm is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri and comprises of Kamwenja and Hill farms .The farm ownership dates back to early 1890 when Kenya was still a British Colony. The farm is unique due to the fact that it is among the first coffee plantations to be established in Eastern Africa with its first planting in 1914. Additionally its large size is unequalled in the region and its wet mill was constructed way back in 1934. This mill was then used by the Consolata Fathers to process coffee for export to Italy. The mill is functional to date.
Nyeri Hill Farm has Annual average rainfall is 950-1200 mm in a bimodal pattern. The farm lies between two permanent rivers namely River Chania and Muringato, which originate from natural springs on the Aberdare Ranges. The soils on the farm are well drained very deep loams of high fertility. The temperatures are between 7-28 degrees Celsius. Flowering for the main crop is between March and May with the harvest period between October and January. Flowering for the fly crop is between September and November with the harvest period between May and September.
