In 1994 ‘’BRAVO’’, had above 60% of the Greek Coffee Market Share. Part of our History is also the Brazilian Coffee Shop at Voukourestiou Str.1, which was the First Cafe Shop in Greece Serving Espresso.
MOKKA story begins in 1923 on Athinas Street 44. There, Chris Samourkas opened the first family coffee shop. The coffee in the coffee shop was offered to customers always freshly roasted and freshly grounded. Around 1950’s, Dimitrios Apostolidis and Theodore Samourkas began to open a chain of coffee shops. All coffee shops had their own coffee roaster in order the coffee to be always freshly-roasted. For the family coffee was and is primarily, a ‘pleasure’. At the same time the family’s coffee was renamed to ‘’BRAVO’’, the leading brand in the Greek market for many years.
In 1994 the ‘’BRAVO’’ company was sold to the multinational Sara Lee. The first coffee shop, however, continued until 1998 under the direction of Dimitrios Apostolidis and his grandson Nikos Psomas. In 1999 the dream becomes reality, the historic neoclassical building was renovated, as well as the old coffee shop and café. Our roasting history and tradition, continues to the 4th generation. We have created a coffee centre of a 1000 sq.m., in the historical centre of Athens. A must see place for everyone involved with coffee. We named our coffee with its first name, from 1920, MOKKA. MOKKA is responsible for the selection and promotion of Speciality Coffees, for roasting and processing them through the best production facilities, always combining our secrets, our long experience and our love for coffee. Additional part of our history was the famous cafe ‘Brazilian’. At this cafe espresso was firstly served in Greece. It was the meeting point of many artists, politicians and important people. The cafe was run by the father of Nikos, Antonis Psomas from 1980 till it’s shutdown of it, in 2001.
Our target Our goal is to be among the best coffee roasters around the world. We want to be chosen because of our quality, our knowledge and expertise. We source, co-operate with well known coffee producers around the world in order to direct trade, process and promote their best coffee lots. Our roasting profiles has progressed a lot through the years. Our smooth deep roast aims for the full development of the coffee beans, providing a clean and balanced cup. We want to preserve and enhance as much of the natural coffee flavours and not to cover them with roasty or burnt notes. We continually review our coffees by cupping.
